The end user is responsible to assure that the calculation method is compatible to the process conditions. ![]() Many thousands of thermowells were designed using this method. But after a catastrophic incident at the Japanese nuclear power station Monju in 1995, where a thermowell failed which previously had passed the ASME PTC calculation, the standard required a review. It was discovered that there are specific conditions, which create a second so called inline resonance of the thermowell. This critical oscillation has half of the frequency ratio of the known transverse resonance perpendicular to the flow. During a long process, many global experts created a new thermowell calculation method ASME PTC 19.3 TW-2016, which is the base for the calculation program presented by WIKA Instruments.
